David Todd “Toddy”
Originally from a Sheep and Cattle farming background David is married, with 3 adult children (2 in the workforce, 1 at University), and lives on an apple orchard which is leased out. David has a B Com Ag (Valuation and Farm Management) from Lincoln.
After an extensive Rural Banking career David established “Toddy Talks” in 2011. Alongside David’s work as an MC, David provides Sales Training, Keynote addresses, and Facilitation as well as some specific project work. As a presenter, David’s style is both entertaining and thought provoking.
David’s client list includes, among others, Harcourts, Silver Fern Farms, Landcorp, BNZ, Mission Estate, Dairy NZ, BrokerNet, Southernwide, Lawlink and Pioneer. He has spoken throughout New Zealand, in Australia, Bangkok Thailand and joins us fresh from engagements in the UK.
Susan Paterson ONZM – Professional Director
Using Technology to Drive Success - A Director’s Perspective
Susan Paterson has been a professional director since 1996. Susan brings over 25 years of governance experience during which time Susan has experienced much of the technological revolution facing businesses today. With the influx of new technology, all industry sectors are facing disruption and there will be winners and losers. Susan Paterson will share insights into some of the changes taking place, the importance of research and development and aligning your strategy to keep your business ahead of the field.
Susan has a Bachelor of Pharmacy and practised as a pharmacist before moving into management roles in New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Susan completed an MBA at London Business School and was a strategy consultant for the Boston based Index Group across Europe and the USA, focussing on the strategic use of IT. She chairs Steel and Tube and Theta Ltd, with other directorships including Goodman Property, Electricity Authority, Arvida Group Ltd, Les Mills Holdings Limited, and Sky TV. Susan has been an external monetary policy advisor to Adrian Orr, Governor of the Reserve Bank. Past directorships include Transpower NZ Limited, St Cuthbert’s College, the NZ Eco Labelling Trust, Housing New Zealand and Ports of Auckland. Susan was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2015 for services to corporate governance.

Callum has a Masters (1st Class Hons) and PhD researching franchising and is the Managing Director of Franchize Consultants – leading franchise development and performance improvement projects across a range of business sectors and involving many household names and emerging brands. Aside from consulting, Callum has also been instrumental developing franchising education and training programmes, franchising research (including the Franchising Confidence Index) and the Best Practice 500 series of franchising best practices.

Raising Franchisee standards through Customer insights and Technology
David Ovendale will share how he has utilised Technology and Customer insights to significantly raise Franchisee standards, providing learnings and insights which could be easily implemented into other franchise systems to support change.
Originally from South Africa, David is an experienced GM and CEO with over 20 years’ experience in international tourism in 6 different countries. He joined the TOP 10 Group as CEO in July 2013 and prior to that was General Manager of NRMA Travel, the retail travel division of NRMA Motoring and Services, based in Sydney. Over an extended period as GM Sales & Marketing for NZSki Ltd, he sat on the Board of Destination Queenstown, the Mt Hutt Marketing Group and the Ski Tourism Marketing Network, a body charged primarily with growing winter visitor numbers into New Zealand. During his time at TOP 10 David has been instrumental in driving improvement and growth across all business metrics including the key measure of short term accommodation revenue across the Group. David holds a Bachelor of Arts degree and post-graduate LLB, both from the University of Cape Town.

He has developed several influential models such as the Franchisor Wheel of Excellence and the Franchise E-Factor. Greg is highly respected in the global franchising sector and has been inducted into the Australian Franchise Hall of Fame.
Sara Pantaleo – La Porchetta CEOLa Porchetta Case Study
Sara Pantaleo will share her view on the challenges of franchising in today’s world. Hear how, La Porchetta a 30 year old franchise system is navigating disruption in the food sector, particularly focusing on events of the last few years, which demand that a franchise must evolve to meet the market needs whilst still ensuring all stakeholders come along for the journey.
Sara drove growth of the La Porchetta brand from only 12 outlets in 1996 into the largest, licensed, a-la-carte restaurant franchise in Australasia today by building systems and process that enabled the company to expand without compromising its core family values and culture.
With the right elements in place, Sara went on to introduce a culture of innovation that positioned La Porchetta for continued strong growth.
A passionate advocate for franchising, Sara has served on the FCA state and national boards. Her commitment to CFE has seen her among the first group of Australian executives to gain the prestigious Certified Franchise Executive (CFE) accreditation.
Sara was National Franchise Woman of the Year in 2010 and a Telstra Businesswoman of the Year Victorian finalist in 2012.

Paul Wright Chairman of Harcourts International shares the story of a great New Zealand franchise; where it came from, its local and global challenges and success stories, with some learnings along the way which will strike accord with your own franchise. Harcourts began their franchise journey in 1988, 100 years on from their early beginnings. Whilst Harcourts have a proud legacy their total focus is firmly on the future. They are constantly asking how they can improve their systems; how they can offer their clients even higher levels of personal and professional service, and how they can train and equip their people to achieve the best possible results for their clients. Now, 130 years on, they are still all about the future.
Paul has invested over 30 years in growing Harcourts. His drive and enthusiasm in his leadership role coupled with his experience in real estate sales and management has been pivotal in the successful global expansion of the Franchise Group. His expertise in franchise growth through master licensing, joint venturing, mergers and acquisitions has helped Harcourts office numbers build to nearly 700 in 10 Countries with 7000 sales consultants in the last 15 years. Paul was also responsible for the Added Value Services businesses the Group owns. Paul was recently appointed Chairman of Harcourts International.

What’s happening in Australian Franchising
Over recent months, there has been considerable focus on Franchising in Australia. Mary will bring us up to speed on the results of the Australian parliamentary inquiry and what this means for Australian Franchising. From a NZ perspective there will be learnings and insights which will assist us all when reviewing our own Best Practice Franchising Standards.
Mary Aldred commenced as the Chief Executive Officer of the Franchise Council of Australia in April 2018. Mary brings to the role extensive experience across government, industry and business, as well as a strong focus on membership engagement, stakeholder collaboration and effective advocacy. Mary is also a Board Director of Australian Sustainable Hardwoods in Heyfield.

The session is fun and motivating, but it’s not all hype. People leave with a swag of immediate actions to perform and feel their best when looking after customers, peers, staff and family.
With his ‘The Health Presenter’ hat on, Rob uses plenty of well-being examples and many take his advice to improve their health and work/life balance. Great, but he says it’s really not a health talk. It’s about getting the small stuff right, from cancer self-checking to managing emails to spending quality time with a partner or looking after the environment. It’s All About You.
Rob’s focus is simply to encourage people to take a brief time out in their busy lives to consider their most important asset – themselves. And to get you thinking about sustainable actions that you can do so you have a long and high quality life.
Rob has a Bachelor of Science with majors in Anatomy & Physiology. He has 25 years’ experience in the health and well-being industry where he designed and delivered staff development programs for hundreds of organisations. Prior to that he worked for five years in a cardiac rehabilitation where he wrote the book “Better Blood Pressure”.
Rob established Its Time Foundation that installs solar power in remote Pacific island schools so those kids can have a modern education. He also founded the Plastic Free Oceans platform.
